Sikh women across the Midlands are recounting a wave of hate crimes based on faith has instilled widespread fear in their circles, compelling some to “radically modify” about their daily routines.

Series of Attacks Causes Fear

Two rapes of Sikh women, both in their 20s, reported from Walsall and Oldbury, were recently disclosed during the last several weeks. An individual aged 32 has been charged related to a hate-motivated rape connected with the purported assault in Walsall.

These events, along with a physical aggression on two elderly Sikh taxi drivers located in Wolverhampton, prompted a session in the House of Commons towards October's close about anti-Sikh hate crimes across the Midlands.

Women Altering Daily Lives

A representative associated with a support organization based in the West Midlands explained that women were changing their regular habits to ensure their security.

“The fear, the now complete changing of your day-to-day living, that is real. I have not seen that before,” she remarked. “This is the first time since I’ve set up Sikh Women’s Aid where women have said to us: ‘We are no longer doing the things that we enjoy because we might get harmed doing them.’”

Women were “not comfortable” visiting fitness centers, or walking or running currently, she indicated. “They participate in these endeavors together. They update loved ones on their location.”

“A violent incident in Walsall causes anxiety for ladies in Coventry as it’s part of the same region,” she said. “Undoubtedly, there’s been a change in how females perceive their personal security.”

Public Reactions and Defensive Steps

Sikh temples across the Midlands have begun distributing protective alarms to females to help ensure their security.

At one Walsall gurdwara, a frequent visitor mentioned that the attacks had “transformed everything” for local Sikh residents.

Specifically, she expressed she was anxious attending worship by herself, and she cautioned her elderly mother to exercise caution while answering the door. “Everyone is a potential victim,” she affirmed. “No one is safe from harm, regardless of the hour.”

A different attendee mentioned she was taking extra precautions when going to work. “I try and find parking nearer to the bus station,” she said. “I play paath [prayer] in my earpieces at minimal volume, ensuring I remain aware of traffic and my environment.”

Echoes of Past Anxieties

A woman raising three girls expressed: “We go for walks, the girls and I, and it just feels very unsafe at the moment with all these crimes.

“In the past, we didn’t contemplate these defensive actions,” she continued. “I’m always watching my back.”

For someone who grew up locally, the environment is reminiscent of the discrimination endured by elders during the seventies and eighties.

“We’ve experienced all this in the 1980s when our mums used to go past where the community hall is,” she reflected. “We used to have the National Front and all the people sat there and they used to spit at them, call them names or set dogs on them. For some reason, I’m going back to that. In my head, I think those times are almost back.”

A public official echoed this, noting individuals sensed “we’ve regressed to an era … marked by overt racism”.

“Residents fear venturing into public spaces,” she emphasized. “People are scared to wear the artefacts of their religion; turbans or head coverings.”

Government Measures and Supportive Statements

The local council had installed extra CCTV near temples to ease public concerns.

Law enforcement officials stated they were organizing talks with public figures, women’s groups, and public advocates, as well as visiting faith establishments, to talk about ladies’ protection.

“It’s been a very difficult week for the community,” a senior officer told a gurdwara committee. “Everyone merits a life free from terror in their community.”

Municipal leadership stated they had been “engaging jointly with authorities, the Sikh public, and wider society to deliver assistance and peace of mind”.

Another council leader remarked: “The terrible occurrence in Oldbury left us all appalled.” She added that the council worked with the police as part of a safety partnership to tackle violence against women and girls and hate crime.
