A trio of officers perished and more than a dozen additional individuals were hurt in an apparently premeditated gas explosion at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The explosion took place as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the house in the vicinity of the Verona region to carry out an removal notice for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.

The three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman got detained at the site and one more individual who escaped after the incident was found shortly later. Each of them have been transported to hospital.

The detonation could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the scene showed the building turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who added that previous tries had been made to evict the three siblings in the past.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto area, the regional head, said the property was subject to an removal notice due to debts incurred by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to engage the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the house. When the officers came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think one of the residents caused the blast.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Claudio Papagno stated to the media.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the detonation immediately struck our members,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also found at the property, the minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the blast comprised an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three members of national police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

The prosecutor believed the detonation had occurred on a floor above the access point and stated to reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the explosion, he mentioned personnel had “heard a whistle, likely the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents informed Italian media, mentioning that the three had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister the Defence Minister joined other elected representatives in honoring the three men who had died in the performance of their duties.
